Read the comments of students answering the questions:
Is national literature relevant in the 21st century?
National Literature is relevant today because while facts are concrete for every country, fiction is an interpretation of events that explore emotions and perspectives that are unique to a nation.
Because most literature is easily understood, read, and absorbed by people everywhere, regardless of their origins, national literature is completely irrelevant. Writers and readers are not held down and constrained by their nationalities.
The national literature is relevant today because there are different types of books and it’s very good for diversification . And we studie now a lot of national’s authors and their works (books for example)
I was a verry happy to read your last post and to learn that American litterature, despite the globalization of culture is important to you and have a value in America. In France as we care about our writers, it is also the franch culture and I think is the most famous authors : Stendhal, Maupassant, Zola, Flaubert, … All there authors, we are studying them in class and the readings bring us a lot. And two years Ago I read “boule de suif” by maupassant, who puts up a historical and social context very interessting Last year I read “le rouge et le noir” by Stendhal who is also a book that allows us to understand a historical and moral context. I also read “Bel ami” written by Maupassant adapted cinematically in 2011. All these novels have helped me to understand that doesn’t matter the period the situation doesn’t really change. Whatever if it is Maupassant’s novel happens in 1880 or if it happens now : money, manipulation, prejudices, are still prevalent. For my exams, I have read many text of Zola and Flaubert which are in the programm I have studied ” the charachter in the novel of the XVII century to nowedays ” and we could see that this character didn’t change much. Zola is one of the great writers of the world timeless, he is useful both morally and historacally. It is necessary to read these french works, of french culture in the aim of do not loose our roots our morals. Despite globalization I think we should continue to focus on our French heritage. What do you think about it ? Looking fowad to a reply.
French national literature is limited only by the language. If we think about it, Literature cannot be just national.
Today, in the 21st century the United States of America are dominant, and with the globalisation of the society almost every country has the same Culture.
Once more the question arises: Is national literature relevant for the 21st century ?
Let us therefore take a clearer look at the separation between language and nation, and also the fact that literature is universal, taking “Le chercheur d’or” by J.M.G Le Clézio.
The first thing that can be said is that books are written in French but all writers belong to a literary movement which has principles coming from everywhere in the world.
It would be useful to consider the literature of Zola, Balzac and Flaubert, if we think about it they were French but they wanted people from everywhere in the world to read their books.
They have written books for the world not for a minority of people in a country. Literature wants to teach something for all of us.
Moreover, if we turn to this well-known writer : George Simenon, he has written a lot of detective novels. But, we have to say that he is Belgian so can we truly speak about national literature ?
We should perhaps go further, and ask whether it is always the same problem everywhere around the world.
As we shall see in greater detail later, Literature had always been, is and will be universal.
The first telling argument is that no one said one day that literature would be just national, it is transnational.
J.M.G Le clezio has written a French language book, but ha has written a book who reflects nature everywhere in the world, the different types of societies, the different political or even economic systems.
We know that every country has its own culture but as J.M.G Le Clezio said in this book ” There are two worlds today; The world I call the traditional society society which is based on Myths”
That is why People cannot today continue to speak about national literature because almost all people who reads books have the same way of life.
It would be naïve to consider that every country has books only for its population. That is not true, in the 21st century the fact is that all people are in relation, they share the same way of life.
This comes from the progress in communications.
We must also remenber that people have lesser sense of patriotism because of the globalisation of the world. Today People have understand the value of sharing their culture.
To conclude, national Literature is not relevant for the 21st century. The globalisationb of the world gives the way to sharing the literature of all countries.
Life in modern societies implies that literature will stay for ever universal.
